Does anyone know how the scoring system works and is there a way of knowing when the programme from each club was obtained?

I ask as ours was pants at the start of the campaign and we did well just to get something produced as the editor had left the club. It has however evolved into something far better as the season progressed and my pc skills have developed! Would be good to know if it is a recent copy that scored so poorly as if it is I best get back to PC school!

Sorry I'm missing something here. Is this an official body and were we supposed to contribute? And what yard stick are you using to say which is best or indeed worst - Storrington for example.

Shall we now do one on who has the best facilities out of these listed clubs? So if you've got a great programme and no shelter in the rain to read it, it rather smacks of very little importance.

Would I be right in saying that this is the kind of postings we get through the summer as everyone awaits a new season?

Well Bob ,

If you don't like the topics you could always start some yourself which are worthy of discussion.

1,000 people sometimes view and comment but only a handful of people start topics, without them this site would be nothing.

The problem is without topics we have no forum

Wow...chill Bob- simply got a letter from these people asking to put the results on the forum, as far as i can see they are groundhoppers who visit each ground at least once a year and devise a system to score programmes, these guys tend to be the most loyal source of revenue most clubs have these days with most attendances being poor so i thought it wouldnt harm to showcase their work, it also makes a nice change from every topic posted becoming negative which most members of this forum have spotted of late - if anyone else wants the details of the people that do the 'scoring' PM me and i will pass on the details......

Chill pill mate!

To be fair, back in the early noughties when I was doing the EP programme, seeing my name at the top of the tree made me quite proud!

Hence my question Geoff; was a tad gutted to have once again been amongst the relegation candidates! Considering it is a league requirement (I believe so please correct me if I'm wrong) to produce a programme of sorts I welcome these chaps showing an interest and independently reviewing them. Really would like to understand the scoring mechanism. God I'm such an anorak!

Ok I might be a bit out of order but if you've worked hard all season to produce a programme it's a bit unfair to see yourself at the bottom of this poll. I can't imagine the response I'll get from our programme editor by not being included in this league.

Still, better to have not been listed than voted bottom guess?

On the subject of starting threads - I start dozens of threads and that has no bearing on this Jim, be fair now.

Don't think the club necessarily have to put the programme editor into the hat Bob. I think anyone can put them forward (I could be wrong however).

It's a magazine that writes to all club secretaries before the season starts asking them to mail in a programme from at least three of their standard home matches (ie league).

Some sec's also send in the away programme when they go as well. The guy who used to do LA was always sending them in from his travels.

They then have a scoring system which includes the number of pages of content in ratio to adverts, match reports, divisional tables and results etc etc.

I won it three years in a row with EP then Rustington and I got beat on the fourth year by Shoreham who's guy put in every league table and every match report that he could get off the clubs websites. To be honest it was like the legendary Redhill programmes of old.

I gave up doing 60 page programmes the same year as I was paying for it myself and each programme cost me about £1.40 but the club sold it for a quid but times got a bit hard and I couldn't afford the weekly 60 page job and trimmed it down to 24 pages.

The first year I won it at EP, my programme used to be 96 pages during the second half of the season. I came third in the whole country for Non-League programmes which included right up to the conference. As Geoff says, it does give you a lot of pride.

Anyway, the basic just of it, is get the address from the club sec and then send in a programme every week if you are interested in winning it. You don't get anything except the ability to put their crest in your programme as a winner. and the satisfaction of recognition for a job well done.

Hope that helps.

GeordiePhantom is not too far out on how the current system works except to say that programmes are now obtained through a mix of ways throughout the season such as via match officials, attendence at games and personal visits to grounds on matchdays along with written requests where no other means are possible. They are then independently assessed by a non-league programme buff using a tried and tested comprehensive set of criteria devised over a number of years. The survey is unofficial although out of courtesy the County League is informed of the results. The organisers hope that it recognises all the hard work and effort by programme editors that goes in to producing programmes for spectators at games. It is not meant to be critical of those clubs that fare less well in the assessment but if it helps to raise standards then so be it. The two clubs that were not assessed arose purely because it proved impossible to obtain copies through the channels described above and by written request. Programme Monthly kindly published the results in full, including a copy of the overall winners' front cover. In doing so, the organisers believe all participating clubs and the County League received excellent publicity for their efforts. Perhaps no bad thing given the competition in its present format has appeared to be under threat recently?
