A GRIM NIGHT FOR THE REDS

Before seeing the Lingfield v Langney Wands match, i thought i would 'pop in' to see the first half of the Smallfield ( 4th ) versus Cuckfield Rangers ( 14th ) by way of a 1815 KO.

This time last year it was boiling up nicely for the Championship battle between the 'Field and Peacehaven Untd, the latter nicking it by a point.

Fast forward 12 months a slightly different story with the homesters languishing 4th 13 pts behind leaders Jarvis Brook, thereby a mammoth task to even get the runners spot yet again, but after tonights result perhaps a slightly lowering of sights might be more applicable.

According to the secretary players have moved on to perhaps greener pastures, as from ones personnel view only around 5 'ish looked familiar from last season, whilst the visitors tonight Cuckfield firmly entrenched in the nether regions came with hope if not expectancy, the playing surface ( i use the term loosely ) waterlogged the previous week was naturally uncut with the grass in places ( stop, we get the picture ) with the pitch markings almost lost from sight, but credit to both sides as they just got on with the game as if this was nothing new to them. ( shades of Southern Combination Div 1 did flash before ones eyes ) on this subject.

For the 'Field kicking toward the 'Plough' chances were few and far between, with Ryan Pearson toiling away upfront, whilst left midfield Jamie Liddle seemed the more lightly to cause problems to the Rangers defence, whilst custodian Zak Rice at the back, continued to wage a one man war with his fellow defenders, not helped by having to extract the ball from the ditch and bushes beyond ( nothings changed since the 50's ). the second Rangers goal came right on half time, an appropriate time to bid farewell and then move to the next port of call namely Lingfield and a nice cup of tea!
